The History of Darley House

Darley House is a beautiful Georgian country house situated in the historic village of Darley Dale, on the edge of the Peak District National Park. Dating from the early nineteenth century, the house is a fine example of elegant Georgian architecture and has been lovingly restored while retaining its original character and charm.

One of Darley House's most fascinating connections is with the celebrated Victorian gardener and architect Sir Joseph Paxton. In 1845, Paxton then Head Gardener to the Duke of Devonshire at nearby Chatsworth House purchased Darley House for his daughter and redesigned its gardens.

The grounds still feature many of Paxton's original ideas, including graceful stone terraces, ornamental planting and specimen trees, some of which were planted by Paxton himself over 175 years ago. Evidence also remains of a small conservatory built at Darley House, believed to have been an early prototype for the revolutionary glass-and-iron design that Paxton later developed into London's famous Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851.

Today, Darley House combines its rich heritage with luxurious modern comforts, offering guests an exclusive country retreat in one of England's most beautiful landscapes. Its unique history, elegant interiors and remarkable gardens make it the perfect base from which to explore the Peak District's stately homes, historic villages and breathtaking scenery.
