A Royal Day at Chatsworth House & the Perfect Taste of Bakewell

Some places exceed every expectation, and Chatsworth House is undoubtedly one of them. 

As guests of Hartingtons Heritage Tours, we enjoyed something few visitors ever experience - a private VIP guided tour of one of Britain's grandest stately homes. 

Long before the doors opened to the public, we were welcomed inside the ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. Walking through magnificent state rooms, priceless art collections and breathtaking galleries without the usual crowds created an atmosphere that felt wonderfully intimate. 

Every room revealed another masterpiece. From centuries-old paintings and sculptures to exquisite furniture collected over generations, Chatsworth is less a house and more a living museum of British history. 

Our guide shared fascinating stories of royal visits, political intrigue, family traditions and the remarkable people who have shaped the estate for over 500 years. It quickly became clear why Chatsworth has appeared in countless films and television productions, captivating audiences around the world. 

The gardens were equally unforgettable. 

Acres of beautifully designed landscapes unfolded before us, from elegant fountains and formal terraces to woodland walks and hidden sculptures. Every turn revealed another perfect photograph and another reason to linger just a little longer. Also comparing the similarities and differences to Joseph Paxtons own gardens at Darley House the place we get to spend everyday and evening. 

After such an extraordinary morning, we travelled to the charming market town of Bakewell. 

Famous throughout Britain for its iconic dessert, Bakewell proved to be so much more than simply its famous pudding. Independent boutiques, antique shops, traditional stone buildings and riverside walks created the perfect atmosphere for a relaxed afternoon. 

Of course, no visit would be complete without tasting an authentic Bakewell Pudding. 

Served warm with its delicate flaky pastry, rich almond filling and centuries-old recipe, it quickly became the highlight of many conversations around the dinner table that evening. There is simply no comparison between the genuine article and the imitations found elsewhere. 

Returning home, our private chef once again prepared an elegant evening meal using the finest local produce, allowing us to reflect on a day filled with aristocratic grandeur, beautiful gardens and unforgettable English hospitality. 

This wasn't simply visiting Chatsworth. It was experiencing one of England's greatest estates exactly as it deserves to be experienced.
